There’s something powerful about painting a face—the moment when a few brushstrokes suddenly feel alive, when personality begins to emerge from the canvas.
Whether you’ve never painted in oil before or you’ve struggled to capture a likeness, this class breaks the process down into clear, manageable pieces.
Our Beginner Portrait Painting class (oil) is designed to guide you step by step, in a way that feels approachable, encouraging, and deeply rewarding.

This course is perfect for those new to portrait painting or those who want to improve their portrait painting skills.

We will start with basic information about drawing the head such as proportions, planes of the head, placement of the features, and general measurements. We'll work in layers starting with a monochrome underpainting, then moving to a first layer, second layer, and then finishing details.

You’ll learn how to see proportions accurately, mix natural skin tones, understand light and shadow, and simplify complex features like eyes, noses, and mouths.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about growth. In a relaxed, supportive studio environment, you’ll gain confidence with every session, building skills that will carry into every painting you create. Along the way, you’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of producing.

Each week, Robin will provide a demo, and students will receive individual critiques and guidance.

If you’ve ever wanted to paint a portrait but didn’t know where to start, this is your invitation. Come learn the foundations, enjoy the process, and watch your portraits come to life.
